Roach

May 14, 1692 – Saturday
Salem Village
Young Ann Putnam had seen, but not been harmed by, the specter of Elizabeth Hart for some time. The real Goody Hart, wife of a Lynn farmer, visited the girl as Martha Corey and Willard had earlier, and sought to resolve the accusations with reason. Her results were equally unsuccessful, for her specter began to torment Ann. Today, Nathaniel Ingersoll and Thomas Putnam entered complaints against Elizabeth Hart and Thomas Farrar Sr. of Lynn; two suspects from Reading – Elizabeth Coleson and Bethia Certer Jr. (for a second time); and several from Salem Village – George Jacobs Jr. with his wife Rebecca, and her brother Daniel Andrews, plus Sarah Buckley and her daughter Mary Witheredge.

May 17, 1692 – Tuesday
Salem Village
Five suspects were in custody at Ingersoll’s when Marshal George Herrick arrived in Salem Village; Rebecca Jacobs, Sarah Buckley, Mary Witheredge, Elizabeth Hart, and Thomas Farrar Sr. As soon as Herrick locked them in the watchhouse, Constable John Putnam rode up with John Willard and the afflicted screamed in pain until Herrick pinioned Willard.

May 18, 1692 – Wednesday
Salem Village
With Rev. Samuel Parris and Ezekiel Cheever ready to take notes, John Hathorne and Jonathan Corwin sat in Salem Village to hear the postponed cases. (Parris and Cheever had written the earlier transcriptions from their shorthand on full sheets of paper with generous margins. Today, by contrast, Parris’s final notes for Sarah Buckley crowded a card no longer than a man’s hand.)
Elizabeth Hart, wife of Lynn farmer Isaac Hart, was bold enough to have confronted Ann Putnam Jr. directly when the girl accused her of witchcraft, and outspoken enough that the Lynn Church had reprimanded her in 1655 for calling her fellow members fools and lackwits. She was examined and held for tormenting Mary Warren.

October 19, 1692 – Wednesday
Salem Town
Boston
Back in Boston, the General Court continued to receive petitions for the imprisoned. Not only was that good woman Elizabeth Hart in misery, wrote her son Thomas, but her husband was left “ancient and decrepit.”

<link rel='alternate' type='text/html' href='http://jdawnfamily.blogspot.com/2010/10/elizabeth-hart-witch-trials-information.html' title='On Elizabeth Hart, from: The Salem witch trials: a day-by-day chronicle of a community under siege By Marilynne K. Further information on him is available, but I wasn't sure that was what you were after.

They had one son, Thomas Lassiter, b. June/02/1670, Nansemond, Virginia; d. February/15/1745, Edgecombe, North Carolina.

There is only a notation that Prudance's father was called "Nee", which can be a full name for any American Indian of that period. Her mother is not listed but I am looking for her diligently, and because the Cherokee are a matriarchal society, I am hopeful that some record of her may be found somewhere. It is very hard to find records back this far in the Americas, but sometimes you get lucky!

Happy hunting for further information, and hopefully you'll share anything you find with me.

As a matter of interest for you:
Nansemond, VA was in the middle of the "Indian" territory of that time, and was considered "Indian" land. It is more than possible that Robert came from England, married Prudance, and was invited to remain on the land for as long as he chose. The Cherokee were considered "civilized" by the whites of the area, and he would not have had any reason to move away from his wife's home. It seems he might have died there, but his death and burial information is not listed and cannot be considered true until it has been verified. Prudance has no death or burial information listed at this time, either. I will continue looking.

Milly Turner and Family - Book Excerpt

From "Unruly Women: The Politics of Social and Sexual Control in the Old South"
Book by Victoria E. Bynum; University of North Carolina Press, 1992

"Even more malicious were the charges of fornication against six legally and long-married couples in Montgomery County, whose marriages probably had not been considered interracial by most citizens of their community before the war. Six sons and daughters of John and Eleanor Hussey--Milly, Nelly, Sarah, Mary, Samuel, and Lindsay-although indistinguishable in appearance from whites, were descended through their father from Milly Turner, a free woman of one-eighth African ancestry. Turner had been accepted as white in her native South Carolina, where she married a white man, Samuel Hussey, and raised her son John as a white. John Hussey married Eleanor, a white woman, and they migrated to North Carolina, where they and their children were accepted as white until the Civil War. First initiated in the fall of 1861, the fornication charges were not dropped until late 1864. Further harassment of the family is indicated by the arrest of John Hussey in 1863 for illegal possession of firearms, a charge traditionally reserved in the antebellum South for free black males."

Affidavit - Turner Origins

Milly Turner (5x Great-Grandmother)
m. According to her tombstone she died at age 110. The date of her birth, according to her tombstone is 1751, but varies with census records which indicate as late as 1767. She died in 1862 in Lee County, Alabama.

The little family cemetery located near the community of Marvin, is
situated on a knoll and is fenced. An old small building adjoins the
cemetery and is approximately 10 x 10, and is reported to be an old one room schoolhouse used by area children. At the time of her death, she was apparently living with child, John Miles Parker, as he and his descendants appear to be the others buried in the cemetery. It is an interesting thought that she had lived in three countries in her lifetime: an English colony, The United States of America, and The Confederate States of America.

According to an article published in The Southern Star on July 19, 1899, by W. L. Andrews, Elizabeth’s family were Quaker’s who lived on the Roanoke River in Virginia in 1750-80 and in 1752 three orphan children were left in the community. They were Elizabeth, Folson or Thelston Andrews, and a baby sister. Lizzie was adopted by a family and given a good education. She had fair skin, blue eyes, brown hair, and weighed 108 pounds at 19 years of age. She learned to dance and at the function given at the Quaker mansion, she was considered the toast of the every. It is said she could run an old fashioned cotillion or reel, for the misty mazes of the round dance had not made its appearance then, with a glass of water on her head without upsetting it. Lizzie first married Elias Hays about 1770, by whom she had
a son, Elias Hayes, Jr, who was born Dec 24, 1783. During her life with
Hays, it is said that George and Martha Wasington stopped at her house and got a drink of water. She described Martha Washington as a kindly disposed lady, unaffected with fashion or the dignity of her position before the world.

Euphemia Cornelia Whitman Parker - Wife of Terry Cadmus Parker

Euphemia Parker - 3x Ggrandmother
1850-1912

Tombstone: (Oakwood Cemetery, Troy Alabama)
<img style="cursor:pointer; He died on Friday at the age of 78 years.

"Ted" Coles as he was popularly known, was the village
carpenter, postmaster, builder, wheelwright, and
undertaker, having acquired the business from his father
who was also sexton from 1882-1907.

One of the first to own a motor cycle in these parts, Mr.
Coles could remember taking his wife and three of his
children on a solo machine for an outing to Burnham!

Years ago he was a keen member of Enmore Cricket Club
and at one time there were no fewer than six members of
the family on the village team.

Funeral Tributes to Mr. E.H. Arnold, Burwell Ferguson, Israel Moore, Test.

This will reasonably confirms that the Betsy Thompson who married our Jesse Crews is the daughter of George Thompson, and also gives a clue as to the maiden name of his wife, Ann. He lists his brother-in-law as John Ogletree, so one can reasonably ascertain that he is referring to the brother of his wife, which would make her maiden surname Ogletree as well.

AND, if this is correct, Ann Ogletree (George's wife) would have been the great-aunt of our 5x GGmother, Susan Ogletree (Ann was David Ogletree's sister). She was also James Crews' GGrandmother, so...
James Crews and Susan Ogletree would have been second cousins.

None of this is terribly unusual for that time, of course, as certain family groups tended to stick together for the most part, stay in the same areas, and intermarry frequently.

Crews Family Line - Walter Franklin Crews

Walter Franklin Crews (GGrandfather) 1891-1957
m. That would fit in if the mom's last name was Harris. It seems like they were denied application in to the Dawes rolls as they could not prove that their ancestors were not granted land from the Dancing Rabbit Treaty of 1830." (Mary Wade, email: , 2003.)

(NOTE FROM RALPH TERRY: Recent findings show that the Hansons must have had Mississippi Choctaw blood. At least Pinkney and his sister Elizabeth, and several others of their descendants tried to claim tribal enrollment in the final rolls, but for some unknown reason were rejected. This doesn't mean they weren't of Indian blood, just could not prove the kinship by government specs. One of the requirements for enrollment was that they had to be living in the Indian territory of their tribe. The application shows the full blood Mississippi Choctaw being their grandmother, mother of their mother, Martha "Patsey" Dunn Hanson, the one called "Whistling Bee." The application gives the grandmother's name as Jane Harris. The 1850 census shows John Dunn's wife to be named Nancy, so she could have been named Nancy Jane Harris.

The following is from the Dawes cards:
"tribe","type","last","first","middle"," age","sex","blood","card", "field","misc"

"CHOC","P","Hanson","Pinkney" "M" "MCR5145"
"CHOC","P","Hanson" ,"Frances" "F" "MCR5145"

"CHOC","MCR"," Cerley","Martha" 24,"F","1/8","MCR5145",,"HEWITT"
" CHOC","P","Cerley","Wilson",,,"M",,"MCR5145", ,
"CHOC","MCR","Cerley","Maudie",,4,"F","1 /16","MCR5145",,"HEWITT"

"CHOC","MCR","Copp edge","Lola",,28,"F","1/8","MCR5145",,"FOSTER"
" CHOC","P","Coppedge","Wallace",,,"M",,"MCR5145" ,,
"CHOC","MCR","Coppedge","Charlie",,10,"M"," 1/16","MCR5145",,"FOSTER"
"CHOC","MCR","Coppedg e","Emmit",,7,"M","1/16","MCR5145",,"FOSTER"

(This is the card of Pinkney Hanson and wife, and his daughters and families Martha and Lola.)

"CHOC","MCR","Howell","Elizabeth",,57," F","1/4","MCR1382",,
"CHOC","P","Howell"," William",,,"M",,"MCR1382",,
"CHOC","MCR","Howel l","Ada",,16,"F","1/8","MCR1382",,
"CHOC"," MCR","Howell","Ida",,16,"F","1/8","MCR1382",,
" CHOC","MCR","Howell","Dora",,12,"F","1/8"," MCR1382",,

(This is the card of Elizabeth Hanson Howell, her husband, and her three youngest children.)

We have always thought they came from Cherokee blood, but don't see how it can be both, unless it goes back to earlier generations on this line.)

Turner Family Line - Meshack Turner

Meshack Turner 1725-1794 (6x GGrandfather)
m. All of the family that was of age to work would get a job. Willie indicated that his sister, Bell (Lizzie Bell), was so hot-headed and had such temper that every time they would all settle in with their jobs she would get mad, get into a fight, and get fired. When one member of the family was fired, the whole family was fired and they would have to move out of the village house and to the next cotton mill. Willie stated that "if he had all the furniture they had to give away or leave behind, he could start a furniture store". The family lived all over Georgia, and at one time in Clinton, Louisiana where Mattie Lee (their last child, who died at age 2) is buried. The family finally settled in Columbus, Ga where they went to work at the Meritas Mill when Willie was a young boy.

William Henry Strickland died February 3, 1925 in Columbus, Ga. He had a mole on his face that he kept shaving off until it spread all over his face. He was diagnosed with Cancer, which is what killed him. He is buried in a plot at Riverdale Cemetery, his grave is marked with a marker bearing his name.

James Verdis Strickland lived to an old age, and when she became physically and mentally feeble, her son Willie and his family tried to care for her. Will and Elizabeth worked, though, and their small children went to school, so there was nobody to look after her during the day. After she fell one day when she was home alone, Will decided that it was time his sister Georgia helped care for their mother, as she had a daughter at home all day. Georgia and her family didn't want to care for Verdis, though, and there was trouble caused when she died. Willie called it "spite work" because Verdis had been pushed on Georgia to care for.

Verdis died April 2, 1937 at Georgia's home. She was buried in Stranger's Ground at Riverdale Cemetery because there was no insurance to pay for the burial.

Elizabeth's brother, Vernon Waters, offered to pay for her burial but Georgia was so spiteful that she refused. Vernon said all he could do was offer his help, but he couldn't make her accept it. None of Will's family went to the funeral except Katherine (Will's daughter) and her husband Oscar. She said she would fight Georgia every step, that she was going.

**Information and stories gathered by Glenda Pate Stephens.

The Columbus Ledger Enquirer
February 4, 1925

William Henry Strickland

Funeral services for William Henry Strickland
age 79 years, who died Tuesday afternoon at
3:45 o'clock after an illness of about two
years, was held Wednesday afternoon at 4 o'clock
from the late residence, 3061 Nineth Avenue.
Rev.
